Tender cinnamon-scented cake holds pockets of soft apple pie filling beneath a light milk glaze. The buttery crumb and sweet, gently spiced fruit bring coffee-cake comfort and apple-pie flavor together in each slice.

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup water
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 can (21 ounces) apple pie filling
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–1½ tablespoons milk
  • Cooking spray, for greasing

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
  2. Combine the dry cake mix, cinnamon, sour cream, eggs, water, and melted butter in a large bowl. Mix until evenly blended, scraping the sides and bottom to remove dry pockets. Do not add any other ingredients listed on the cake mix package.
  3. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  4. Spoon the apple pie filling evenly over the surface in small portions. Do not stir it into the batter; some filling may settle into the cake during baking.
  5. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the cake is golden and set. Test a cake section near the center, avoiding an apple pocket: a skewer should come out without wet batter. Continue baking as needed if the center is not cooked through.
  6. Whisk the powdered sugar with 1 tablespoon milk. Add more milk a little at a time, up to 1½ tablespoons total, until the glaze falls in a thin ribbon.
  7. Drizzle over the warm cake and let stand briefly before cutting into 12 portions.

Kitchen notes

Timing guide:
Prep time: About 15 minutes (estimated)
Cook time: 35–40 minutes

Practical Woman's Secret
Distribute the apple filling in small spoonfuls rather than one heavy mound. This keeps the fruit spread across the cake and makes it easier to check that the batter underneath has baked through.

Serving and Storage
Serve warm or at room temperature, cutting through both the cake and apple filling. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within 2 hours and use within 3–4 days. Warm individual portions gently in the microwave; the glaze will soften and soak further into the cake.
